He implores Catholics to approach the environment in a way that \u201crespects our unique place as human beings,\u201d but recognizes we must remedy \u201cthe damage we have done\u201d to the Earth\u2019s climate. CBIS has been at the forefront of efforts pushing companies to improve their activities related to the use of fossil fuels, deforestation, agriculture, and other land-use. Like the Holy Father, we believe that Catholic teaching provides \u201cample motivation to care for nature\u201d and together with our Participants continue this work that is \u201can essential part\u201d of the Catholic Faith.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYet only when \u2018the economic and social costs of using up shared environmental resourc\u00ades are recognized with transparency and fully borne by those who incur them, not by other peoples or future generations\u2020\u2019 can those ac\u00adtions be considered ethical. (195)\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It is with a sense of responsibility that we engage a wide variety of companies on these issues. We attempt to raise concerns about the social and environmental responsibilities of businesses that can unfortunately be overlooked or \u201creduced to a series of marketing and image-enhancing\u201d measures.<\/p>\n<p>Maximizing profits without regard for the impact on society and the environment may lead to short-term gain, but at the expense of longer-term well-being and the rights of future generations.<\/p>\n<p>Check back frequently for our insights on <em>Laudato si\u2019<\/em> \u2013 we will release our review and analysis of the Pope\u2019s encyclical later this summer.<\/p>\n<p>\u2020 Benedict XVI, Encyclical Letter <em>Caritas in Veritate <\/em>(29 June 2009), 50: <em>AAS <\/em>101 (2009), 686.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Pope Francis makes it clear in Laudato si\u2019 that there is an \u201cinseparable\u201d bond between nature and society.
