Christian Brothers Investment Services Becomes First U.S. Catholic Signatory Of Principles For Responsible Investment

Move Affirms Company’s Commitment to Serving as a Leader in Socially Responsible Investing

NEW YORK – January 21, 2014 – Christian Brothers Investment Services (CBIS), a leader in socially responsible investing (SRI) for Catholic institutions, announced that it has become the first U.S. Catholic signatory of the Principles for Responsible Investment (PRI), an international network of investors working to incorporate sustainable environmental, social, and governance (ESG) principles in their investment decision-making and ownership practices, and by doing so, helping to contribute to a more socially responsible financial system.

The PRI has more than 1,200 signatories worldwide, including asset owners, investment managers, and service providers, representing approximately $35 trillion in assets under management at the end of 2013. The initiative is the leading global network for investors to learn about responsible investing and collaborate with their peers, companies, and policymakers to generate sustainable, long-term investment returns for their clients and beneficiaries.

“We are pleased to welcome CBIS to the PRI,” said Fiona Reynolds, Managing Director of the PRI. “CBIS’ participation ensures that its perspective and approach to responsible investment and ESG integration will be more broadly disseminated within the global investment community and incorporated into our discussions and programs with other signatories.”

In addition to incorporating ESG principles in their investment decision-making and ownership practices, signatories are expected to seek appropriate disclosure on ESG issues by the entities they invest in; be active owners encouraging those entities to adopt environmental, social, and governance best practices; and promote acceptance and implementation of the Principles within the investment industry.

“Extending our commitment to better serve Catholic investors and align investments with Catholic values, CBIS’ participation in the PRI will enhance the effectiveness of our corporate engagement work,” said Daniel P. Nielsen, Director of SRI. “As a PRI signatory, CBIS will also be able to promote the concerns of Catholic investors among other faith-based and responsible investors from around the world.”
